This week we’re looking at car insurance and some of the things you need to know to prevent your cost of motoring increasing. There are some common misconceptions about insurance that need to be clarified to stop you getting caught out and being hit financially.

Cut the cost of motoring tip #23 – You need car insurance even when you’re not driving

Book Theory Test Today says: “It’s true; car insurance is needed even if you’re not driving, but many motorists don’t realise that this is the case. In fact, it’s a legal requirement for a vehicle to be insured unless it has been declared off-road with a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) or if it has been untaxed since before January 31, 1998.”

Not knowing this has led to some motorists being hit with fines, increasing the cost of motoring. But, why is it a legal requirement for a vehicle to be insured if it’s not being driven? The rule is in place to clamp down on uninsured motorists and is upheld by the Continuous Insurance Enforcement Scheme.

This scheme was introduced in June 2011 and states that all cars must be insured even if they’re not being driven. If a car is uninsured then the owner is breaking the law and failure to comply with the law means a fine that increases the cost of motoring, followed by clamping, then seizure and finally the car is destroyed. But, you do get warning letters first.

Book Theory Test Today says: “The rule covers everything, so even if you let your cover expire during a hospital stay or while on your holidays, you’re breaking the law. If you want to avoid increasing the cost of motoring, make sure you’re insured.”

The only escape is to apply for a SORN, which declares that a vehicle will never be driven. You can apply for a SORN via the UK government website, Gov.uk.

Beware! If you want to cut the cost of motoring, don’t just auto-renew your insurance policy. Make a note 6 weeks prior to the renewal date then shop around to get the best deal for you.
