Cut the cost of motoring tip #13 – Driving in Europe
Book Theory Test Today says: “When driving on the continent, too many motorists simply assume that breakdown cover and insurance are covered. However, that’s not always the case and the financial ramifications can be costly and let’s face it, the cost of motoring is bad enough in Britain, without adding Europe to your motoring woes.â€
Before you set off for your wild ride across Europe, you should really check the following:
- Your car insurance – The majority of comprehensive or third party, fire and theft policies, revert to third party only when outside the UK. Basically, these policies will only pay out if you damage another vehicle, not your own and provide no cover if your car is stolen abroad. It’s worth checking your policy with your provider prior to travelling, before you inadvertently increase the cost of motoring.
- Breakdown cover – 99.9% of the time if you leave the UK your breakdown cover becomes invalid. Check to see if you’re covered, but if you’re not, consider upgrading to a European policy or purchase one-off temporary cover.
- Give your vehicle a maintenance check – Cut the cost of motoring by doing a maintenance check before travelling. If you can prevent a problem before it starts, do so. When travelling, do make sure you have all the necessary documents needed so that you can contact someone if your vehicle does breakdown.
- Check out the driving rules – Road rules across many European countries are different to those of the UK. Many UK motorists are caught out by parking fines in other nations because where it may be fine to park in Britain, it may not be in other countries. You can access the AA website for country-by-country road rules. Book Theory Test Today recommends that you check it out.
