From the Mouth of Martin: Top Tips to Slash the Cost of Motoring – #19

Strap yourselves in wannabe petrol heads. With the help of money saving expert, Martin Lewis, Book Theory Test Today is hitting the road with 50 top tips that will cut your motoring costs. Tune in each & every week for a new tip and remember to share with friends and family and slash the cost of motoring.

This week we’re looking at private parking firms who will try to con you and ramp up the cost of motoring by copying council ‘Penalty Charge Notices’ and issuing ‘Parking Charge Notices’. To the naked eye a Parking Charge Notice looks similar to official council tickets, but they’re a bit of a scam.

Cut the cost of motoring tip #19 – Tackling private parking firms

Book Theory Test Today says: “Did you know? Private parking firms can’t actually fine you. Car parking facilities at supermarkets, housing estates and other privately owned land are just very good at impersonating genuine parking tickets. But, they can’t actually fine you; effectively what you’ve got is an invoice aimed at ramping up the cost of motoring.”

Should a ticket get slapped on your windscreen and you know it to be unfair, because there was no signage indicating parking enforcement rules for instance, then like any invoice you can reply and inform those issuing the ‘tickets’ that you won’t be paying and give the reasons why. The cost of motoring is expensive as it is, without these rogue tickets.

By challenging the mimic tickets, you may get some resistance, but they can’t do anything to affect your credit record or send in the heavies without taking the issue through the courts at their time and expense. Even if they do get it to court, it’s likely that the issue would be dismissed if the ticket was unfair.

If you’re challenging one of the UK’s 193 biggest private parking firms, you can appeal to an independent body. Out of 15,000 motorists who have done this, 45 percent of them have been successful in having an unfair ‘ticket’ issued by a private firm, revoked.

Don’t add to the cost of motoring by immediately paying a ticket issued by a private parking firm and don’t let these guys make you believe that they have a right to fine you, because they don’t.

Finally, if you do plan to appeal one of these ‘tickets’ gather as much evidence as you possibly can to support your argument. You should take pictures of signs, ground markings, your vehicle and any meters. If there were other people around, try to get a witness statement too.
