Tune in each & every week for a new tip and remember to share with friends and family and slash the cost of motoring.

This week we’re looking at how to dodge those dreaded parking tickets, which can add huge amounts to the cost of motoring if you’re unfortunate enough to get one.

Cut the cost of motoring tip #17 – Dodging parking tickets

Book Theory Test Today says: “Parking tickets are not only immensely irritating, they’re extortionate. Plus, they can take months to overturn. To help you cut the cost of motoring here are five top parking facts that will help you to avoid getting a ticket.”

1. There is not a standard ‘single yellow’ parking restriction – Some ticket wardens get a little ticket happy, ticketing vehicles parked on single yellow lines and adding to the cost of motoring for you.

However, in some cases you’re permitted to park on single yellows and even a single red line, but these aren’t standardised times. Make sure you check the road signs.

2. Each council has different bank holiday rules – You cannot just park anywhere on bank holidays, it’s a wrong assumption to think you can. Only some councils will permit you to park on a single yellow line or in a resident bay and others will not. As a general rule, if you don’t know, don’t do it.

3. Display your permit or ticket, clearly – One of the biggest reasons motorists end up with a ticket, and add to the cost of motoring, is failure to clearly display a ticket or permit. A pay and display ticket or a permit must be clearly visible to a warden.

4. Watch your wheels – Again, another thing that catches motorists out and increases the cost of motoring, is ‘incomplete’ parking. This means that the wheels of your vehicle are outside the boundaries of a defined parking spot.

If just one wheel is outside of a parking bay, be in no doubt that a warden will be watching ready to issue a ticket.

5. Private car parks equal premium charges – On private land, the rule is ‘there are no rules’. In supermarket, hospital or other privately owned car parks you could be charged huge amounts without any good reason. This is where it pays for you to check every sign to avoid increasing the cost of motoring.
