Whether you’re driving an old banger or a Ferrari, your motor needs an MOT, and that applies once your car is three years old (four in Northern Ireland) and then every 12 months afterwards. So, here are some top tips to help you save money on the MOT.â€
First things first, secure a test date exactly one month prior to the expiration date of your current certificate. Do this and your new certificate will expire exactly 12 months after the old one ends (the earliest time you can do this can be found printed on your MOT test certificate).
If you get your vehicle tested more than a month prior to the due date of the MOT, it will expire exactly one year later. This means that you lose out, adding to the cost of motoring.
Book Theory Test Today says: “To cut the cost of motoring when it comes to MOTs, always book your test in advance if your current certificate has expired. If your vehicle is out of certification, you can drive it to a test centre provided you have a test appointment.â€
Should your motor fail the test, you are permitted to drive the vehicle away from the test centre in order to take it to a repair centre. Once repaired the vehicle would require a retest and must meet a required standard. Driving away at this point without a valid MOT certificate will result in a hefty fine.
Prior to an MOT test, it’s worth carrying out your own DIY test to deal with simple problems that so often result in an MOT failure. Something as simple as changing a dead headlight bulb could be the difference between a pass and a fail and ultimately it could cut the cost of motoring for you!
