A West Midlands learner driver from Sutton Coldfield clocked up 35 DVSA practical test failures, spending almost £2,200.
Book Theory Test Today says: “You’re probably wondering why we keep blogging about learner drivers all over the country who fail their DVSA practical driving test loads of times? One word… Motivation. No matter how many times you fail, your day will come, stick with it. Anyway, on with the story of this West Midlands learner driver.â€
Mishaps of a West Midlands learner driver
36 attempts later and the unnamed West Midlands motorist finally passed the practical driving test. However, not before parting with just over £2,200 [based on 36 tests at the weekday price of £62]. The quest of this West Midlands learner driver to pass the test took them five years and saw them visit various test centres across the region.
The motorist began their journey at Kingstanding test centre, failing the exam 10 times. They then had an unsuccessful attempt at Kings Heath, before returning to Kingstanding and failing a further 12 times. The driver then alternated between Sutton Coldfield and South Yardley, finding success at the 36th attempt at the Sutton Coldfield test centre in 2013.
However, the driver does not hold the record as the worst West Midlands learner driver. That crown belongs to a learner motorist from Stoke who racked up a staggering 36 DVSA practical test failures.
The information on the failure-prone West Midlands learner driver was obtained from a Freedom of Information request submitted by the DVSA. The data covers test failure rates between 2009 and mid-2014.
The driver’s 35 unsuccessful attempts even surpass the efforts of notorious learner driver, Maureen Rees, star of BBC’s Driving School. Even she passed at the seventh attempt.
Sense of irony
Ironically, this particular West Midlands learner driver actually came close to test success at the second attempt. However, a serious fault led to an automatic fail. If they had avoided the fault, they would have avoided the misery of a further 33 test failures.
Aside from numerous minor and serious faults, this West Midlands learner driver also recorded eight dangerous faults – meaning actions that put the learner, the exam invigilator, other people and property at risk.
Three of these dangerous faults occurred in just one test taken in Kingstanding and during their sixth attempt they registered no fewer than 20 minor faults, plus six major faults. Eventually, this West Midlands learner driver passed in Sutton Coldfield with eight minors and without any serious faults.
