Britain’s worst learner driver finally passes test

Remember Janine Mars, the woman labelled as Britain’s worst learner driver? She has finally passed her test. Goes to show that perseverance pays off!

It’s taken 15 years and thousands of pounds, but finally Britain’s worst learner driver has succeeded in her pursuit of a driving licence. So bad was her driving, Janine had been blacklisted by many local instructors and thought she would never pass her DVSA practical test.

Janine, who lives on Luton Road in Chatham, had already failed the test on four previous occasions in 2015. Despite a series of intense driving lessons, she admitted that pulling away from a junction proved to be a struggle.

Britain’s worst learner driver – many different instructors

Over her 15 year learning period, Janine has had at least five different instructors – all of which failed to help her get a full UK driving licence. She reckons she has ‘invested’ over £6,000 on around 300 lessons and says that her lack of confidence is responsible for her abysmal driving test record.

She said that even with the incentive of a new car being offered by her mother, Radha, she still could not find the answer to her driving test woes.

Local newspaper

Thanks to Janine’s local newspaper, Kent Online, she was put in touch with their sister publication, the Medway Messenger. The Messenger put Janine in contact with a driving expert, Sandra Macdonald-Ames, to help Janine overcome the driving test.

Sandra, who’s originally from Sittingbourne, but now resides in Brecon, said: “When the paper put us in touch Janine called me and we really hit it off. She came to Wales and spent several days with me and I took her back to basics, as it’s a confidence thing with Janine.”

She added: “She took her test here about eight weeks ago, but she failed on just one thing – putting the car in the wrong gear going up a hill. I was determined she should have another crack at it and she came back. We spent all day out in the car. She’d not driven for the eight week period, but finally she passed.”

Sandra continued: “I knew she had passed as soon as she got back as she was screaming and jumped out of the car to come over and hug me. I told her she needed to get back in the car and let her examiner finish the paperwork before celebrating. I knew she could do it, she was more than capable.”

Janine, who kept her final test attempt a secret, said: “I can’t believe the day has finally come. I rang my mum while Sandra was driving on the way back from the test and put it on loud speaker. My mum was screaming too.”

She added: “I can’t thank the Medway Messenger enough for putting me in touch with Sandra. She is a brilliant instructor and taught me to believe in myself and boosted my confidence.”
