Male Drivers Improving, Women Getting Worse New Figures Show

Book Theory Test Today reveals figures of male and female theory test and practical driving exam pass rates as the battle for driving supremacy continues.

New figures released by the DVSA reveal that the percentage of men passing a theory test and practical driving exam first time is rising. However, the trend is in reverse when it comes to female drivers. With male drivers improving is there any hope for female drivers?

The data, released on 3rd July 2014, does very little to supress stereotypes associated with gender and driving ability. Research shows that while the average national combined pass rate for theory tests and practical driving exams remains steady, at 47.1%, the male pass rate has risen slightly from 50.6% to 50.7%. However, the female combined pass rate has declined from 44% to 43.8%

In terms of the practical driving test, overall less than 50% result in success, but the gents have been able to remain above the 50% mark for the past three years. For the theory test just over 62% result in a first time pass, but men are more likely to pass first time than women.

Despite these figures, it’s worth noting that more women than men have applied for both the theory test and practical exam over the past 7 years. But, men have been more consistent at getting a driving licence.

Book Theory Test Today says:

“With regards to male drivers improving, although there has been a decline in the number of women passing the theory test and practical exam at the first attempt, it’s worth pointing out that more women actually apply to do the test. The number of men taking a theory test and practical exam has steadily dropped over recent years, with research suggesting that they’re put off by the cost of motoring.”
