The answer? A tank. But how do we know for sure? Well one learner driver in Germany took on the challenge of battling a tank in a Toyota Yaris and lost.
Book Theory Test Today has published many blogs on the mishaps of learner drivers, but it’s safe to say that news of a learner driver VS a tank tops the list of bizarre blunders involving a learner motorist.
How did the learner driver VS a tank scenario occur?
It happened on a ring road in the Lippe district of Germany when an 18-year-old female driver thought it would be a good idea to pull out in front of the oncoming tank. As if that wasn’t bad enough, it turns out that the tank was part of British military convoy and it’s fair to say Britain and Germany have a history and this probably didn’t help.
Book Theory Test Today says: “There are two interesting questions that can be raised here. One – how did the learner driver not spot the tank? Two – what the heck was a tank doing on a public highway in the first place?â€
Learner driver VS a tank – the outcome
Learner driver VS a tank, well there was only ever going to be one outcome. Local police say that the learner pulled out in front of the tank and the 24-year-old serviceman operating it couldn’t stop the Challenger 2 tank in time, leaving him nowhere to go but over the bonnet of the learner’s Toyota Yaris.
Unsurprisingly, the front end of the one-tonne car was crushed under 62-tonnes of armour. But what is surprising is that the driver escaped unscathed from the incident and the tank crew were even kind enough to pull her free, despite cutting them up.
The car’s fate was more serious, suffering €12,000 [£8,600] worth of damage, making it a write-off and one of the most costly driving lessons ever.
No tanks were harmed in the writing of this blog!
The British Army
A British army spokesperson said: “Our driving crews go through a very rigorous process before being allowed on the roads and both crews and vehicles are checked regularly. It is something we do take very, very seriously, especially with beasts of that size travelling on public roads.â€
The area where the incident happened is well known for tank convoys using the road, with British Army bases at Paderborn and Herford close by. These facilities are used as military training venues by the German forces and its NATO allies.
Book Theory Test Today must confess that this is the first time we’ve ever come across a learner driver VS a tank and the 18-year-old driver involved has not done the female driving population any favours.
Learner driver VS a tank advice
Learner drivers have a lot to learn as it is, but if we have to offer some advice, we don’t recommend taking on a tank in a Toyota.
