Learner drivers in Shropshire suffer cancelled driving test frustration due to recent driving examiner strikes.
Your stories concerning the recent driving examiner strikes continue to flood in. Today Shropshire is in the spotlight as test centres across the county closed causing cancelled driving test frustration for the region’s learner drivers.
The strikes, which happened on the 19th and 20th of November, resulted in complete closure for the Harlescott LGV Driving Test Centre, Oswestry Driving Test Centre and Shrewsbury Driving Test Centre, while the Telford Driving Test Centre was partially closed.
The Public and Commercial Services Union (PCSU) regional secretary for the West Midlands, Stewart Williams, said that approximately a dozen driving test invigilators across Shropshire had participated in the 48-hour strike, which was staged in protest over working hours.
Mr Williams said: “The strike was well supported by DVSA staff. Most examiners oversee at least seven practical driving exams a day, which is an indication of cancelled driving test numbers over the two-day period.â€
Learners suffer as a result of a cancelled driving test
Book Theory Test Today says: “It’s a learner driver who suffers as a result of a cancelled driving test. Yes, the DVSA has said it will be in contact to rearrange appointments for those affected and informed learners that they can claim out-of-pocket expenses, provided they turned up for the exam. However, it’s not about the money for some.â€
Some learners who suffered a cancelled driving test had taken time off from work, university or college, many of whom might be unable to take the DVSA practical exam on the alternative date offered to them because of such commitments.
Those working expressed that they might not be able to get another day off from work because they’d used their last day of annual leave and would have to wait until the next holiday entitlement period.
With many driving test centres across the UK already experiencing severe backlogs, the recent strike action will result in the rescheduling of a cancelled driving test for many learner drivers. They could find themselves right at the end of the queue again adding insult to injury.
Meanwhile, the PCSU has called on the DVSA to scrap plans to extend the working day of driving examiners plus the number of practical driving tests they would be expected to carry out. They also want the agency to commission research into the psychological and physical effects of increasing the number of tests carried out in a day and the safety implications.
The PCSU has demanded the DVSA does this research prior to making any changes to the working hours of its staff.
