Some rules

Firstly, if you want to apply for your first learner’s permit in Ireland, you need to pass a theory test for that category of vehicle in advance. No theory test certificate, no learner’s permit.

When applying for a learner’s permit, having passed your theory test remember, you must supply the Road Safety Authority (RSA) with a valid form of identification plus two passport-sized photographs so that they can process your learner’s permit.

Replacing a lost Irish driving theory test certificate

If you should lose or misplace your driving theory test certificate, don’t worry, you can get a replacement copy by contacting the RSA. You will be asked to provide some details and yes, it will cost you €15 for a replacement.

What fees can you expect to pay when booking a theory test in Ireland?

Fees for Irish driving theory tests vary depending on the category. They are as follows:

  • Category A or B – €45
  • Category C or D – €72
  • Category CD – €84
  • Module TMT or BMT – €45

Tests can be paid for by credit or debit card, cheque or postal order.

Can you appeal your theory test result?

Yes, you can, but you will be charged €15 for the privilege. However, the fee will be refunded if your appeal is successful.

Other essential information

Once your theory test application has been received, you will be notified of the date, location and time of your exam in advance. Should you wish to reschedule or cancel a test, you will be required to call the RSA.

Arriving at the theory test centre

Upon arrival at your designated driving theory test centre, you can expect your documentation to be thoroughly checked. Remember, you must have some form of identification on your person otherwise, you will not be allowed to enter the exam room. If everything checks out, you will be escorted to a workstation to take your test.
