Surprisingly, this is a commonly asked question and even more surprisingly, experts have managed to come up with a formula to calculate the average time it ‘should’ take a learner driver to get a full licence. It was certainly interesting enough to get the attention of Book Theory Test Today.
According to the expertsÂ
From passing the theory test, to obtaining a full UK driving licence, experts have calculated that it takes a typical learner between 30 to 40 hours to reach a level adequate enough to pass the UK driving test.
According to the experts, if you’re studying for your theory test at least twice a week and taking two, one and a half hour driving lessons each week you should reach driving test standard in as little as eight weeks. This does of course depend on your ability.
If you’re only taking one lesson per week and studying once for your theory test, experts predict that it could take up to six months for you to get a licence.
What do the experts know?
I respect the fact that ‘experts’ have calculated how long, on average, it takes to pass the theory test and practical driving exam. However, their calculation is based purely on driving ability it does not consider some of the barriers which you, as a learner driver, have to face.
What am I talking about? Well, when I was learning to drive at 17 my lesson time was quite sporadic. Why? Because of the cost and that was 14 years ago. Since my days as a learner driver the cost of learning to drive has escalated.
Driving lessons now cost a lot more as does the price of a theory test and practical exam. Therefore, I would have to strongly disagree that a timescale for learning to drive should be based on one’s ability; it’s also a question of affordability.
Bear in mind that I started learning to drive at 17-years-old, but I did not pass until I was 23. Granted, I did fail the practical exam three times before passing at the fourth attempt, but I wouldn’t necessarily say it was down to my driving ability, I would put some of it down to my learning pattern being so fragmented.
The Truth
There is no exact formula that can calculate how long it takes to pass a theory test and practical driving exam, not even based on your driving ability. As Book Theory Test Today has shown before, there are so many learner drivers on the road who have needed 40 or even 50 attempts to pass a theory test or practical driving exam.
How long does it take to learn to drive? How long is a piece of string? However, if you’re reading this and you are learning to drive, speed up your own journey to a driving licence and Book Your Theory Test Today, with us. Free re-test if you’re unsuccessful on your first attempt.
