How long before you get your theory test appointment?

If you’re thinking of making an online theory test booking, you’ll want to know how long it will take to get a theory test appointment after you’ve booked. Here’s what you need to know…

You’ll be pleased to know that tackling waiting times for a theory test appointment is high on the priority list of the DVSA, along with reducing lengthy waiting times for the practical driving test.

However, you may or may not be pleased to hear that waiting times vary depending on your location. That’s good if you live in a location where a theory test appointment is issued pretty quickly, not so great if your location has a reputation for lengthy waiting times.

General theory test appointment waiting times

As a rule of thumb, the DVSA looks to hit a target of 95 per cent of driving theory test candidates receiving a theory test appointment within two weeks of their preferred date, specified when making an online theory test booking.

When booking a theory test online, it’s worth noting that you’re not guaranteed to get a theory test appointment on the day you’ve specified. If you’re holding out for that date, you could be disappointed.

Therefore, when you book a DVSA theory test, you should make sure that you have other available dates besides your primary date. That way you have more chance of securing a theory test appointment sooner rather than later.

If there are no available theory test appointment slots on your required date, you will be offered an alternative appointment. However, when making your online theory test booking you can request that you’re notified of a cancellation by another candidate on your preferred date.

If a cancellation does not materialise on your preferred date and you can’t commit to an alternative date, you will need to reschedule or cancel your theory test appointment within 3 clear working days of your appointment date. Failure to do so will result in you losing your driving theory test fee and you will have to pay again.

Flexibility when it comes to your theory test appointment

You might be fortunate enough to make an online theory test booking and get an appointment for the exact day you requested. Result. However, it doesn’t always work out that way so it’s worth remaining completely flexible when it comes to a theory test appointment. After all, if you decline an appointment, you could wait weeks for another.
