Will Driving Tests Resume After Lockdown 2.0?

With UK driving tests once again suspended amid a second coronavirus lockdown, many of you have asked ‘will driving tests resume’ once restrictions are lifted on 2 December? The DVSA has now announced that all driver, rider, and UK theory will restart on Thursday 3 December.

It was previously unclear what would happen when lockdown 2.0 began on 5 November. People who had a driving test or theory test booked on 2 December did not know whether they would be able to take their test on that day.

While the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) had issued guidance just as the UK went into lockdown, it didn’t specify what would happen on 2 December.

As the country entered lockdown, the DVSA said: “Following the Government announcement on tougher national restrictions from Thursday, driver and rider training and tests will be suspended in England from 5 November until 2 December 2020.”

The DVSA added: “We will be providing further guidance and contacting those affected as soon as we can.”

When Will Driving Tests Resume?

While the DVSA’s initial statement left many driving and theory test candidates in limbo, the government agency has since announced that all practical driving and theory tests will restart on Thursday 3 December.

The DVSA said: “Driving and theory tests remain suspended up to and including Wednesday, 2 December. You should not travel out of England to take a driving test. If you do, you will not be allowed to take your test.”

In Scotland and Wales, driving and theory tests had resumed following ‘firebreak lockdown’ restrictions. However, even tighter restrictions are set to be enforced in Scotland from 6pm on Friday 20 November, which could affect driving and theory tests in the country.

Driving and theory test candidates in England, whose exams have been cancelled because of lockdown 2.0, are being urged not to leave the country to take a test in Scotland or Wales.

Local Coronavirus Restrictions

For candidates affected by local coronavirus restrictions, the DVSA said: “We will contact you if your test is affected by local restrictions and tell you what you need to do.”

Based on the DVSA’s statement, this means that if you have booked a practical driving test or theory test for 2 December, you will not be able to take it on this day. Instead you will have to reschedule for 3 December and after – unless lockdown restrictions are extended.
