Meet the 92-year-old learner driver ready to book a practical driving test

Say hello to Betty Jones, aged 92. She’s just started learning to drive and is determined to book a practical driving test and pass it!

Umming and ahhing about whether to book a practical driving test? Unsure if you’re ready? Well, maybe 92-year-old Betty Jones’ story will give you some inspiration to get your backside in gear.

There are a lot of learner drivers out there who start-off taking driving lessons at a young age. However, for a variety of circumstances, many quit and never go on to land a driving licence. If you’re one of those people, it’s not too late to learn, just ask Betty Jones.

Betty’s dream to book a practical driving test

She’s just got around to learning to drive declaring that ‘it’s never too late to learn new skills.’ Having not been behind the wheel of a car for more than half a century, Betty is now determined to get to a level where she can book a practical driving test and pass it. She recently took her first driving lesson at Huddersfield Driving Experience.

Betty has previously held five provisional driving licences, but never sought to book a practical driving test. Her days are normally filled with activities such as sewing class, gym trips and regular ‘weigh-ins’ at her local slimming club.

Yet she broke away from her hectic schedule to travel to the Leeds Road car park with her daughter, Andrea Lorriman, for her lesson.

Getting to a level where she could book a practical driving test has been a dream of Betty’s and made her bucket list. Under the tutelage of driving instructor, Nigel Deans, she has taken the first step towards realising that dream.

Betty’s first lesson

It turned out to be a really bright day for Betty’s first lesson and she joked: “I couldn’t see anything, I should have brought my sunglasses.”

When asked how she was feeling about getting behind the wheel of a car for the first time in years, she said: “I was a little tentative at first. I had butterflies. I do lack a bit of confidence, yet there’s a car parked on my drive waiting for me to drive it so I need to a book a practical driving test and pass it!”

Betty soon got the hang of the gears when driving around the car park, but performing an emergency stop was beyond her at such an early stage of the process.

Following her first lesson, her instructor Nigel had this to say: “She’s very good, brilliant in fact. She overcame her butterflies and has driven with some confidence.”

Betty, who’s from Carlton in Barnsley, said: “It was wonderful. My butterflies soon passed and I settled into it. I think it would be easier with an automatic car, but I’d love to book a theory test and book a practical driving test, get them passed and get out on the open road.”
