Following on from our recent blog – ‘Am I too old to learn to drive?’ – Book Theory Test Today blogs about Gran who passed the theory test and practical exam aged 77.
At the grand age of 77, Kathleen Mitchell has finally passed her driving theory test and practical exam and now says she can’t wait to get behind the wheel of her husband Tony’s three-litre Jaguar.
Book Theory Test Today says: “This story proves that you’re never too old to take your driving theory test or practical driving exam. It’s a real ‘feel-good’ story and a great inspiration to people of a certain age who doubt themselves when it comes to learning to drive.â€
Kathleen is so glad to have ditched the ‘L-plates’, after deciding to learn to drive after her husband, 78 year-old Tony, suffered a stroke. She successfully completed the theory test before tackling the practical exam.
Mrs Mitchell said: “I managed to book my theory test online and pass that. I think the theory test was the easy part. I was nervous about learning to drive at my age, but was motivated by Tony’s condition and that’s what got me through it all.â€
Having passed, Mrs Mitchell is now really excited about getting behind the wheel of her husband’s car, a monstrous three-litre Jag.
Commenting on the car, Kathleen said: “It’s a wonderful machine and I think I’ll look right at home driving it. I’ve always loved nice cars, but getting to drive a car like this for myself is a real treat. I reckon I’ll turn a few heads, although my husband will be keeping an eye on my speed because he won’t want me to scratch it.â€Â
She added: “It’s easy to get carried away in a car like that because there’s so much power under the bonnet. I just can’t wait to get out and burn some rubber on the open road.â€
Kathleen, who boasts six grandchildren, took her theory test and practical exam in her home town of Brierley, South Yorkshire.Â
Book Theory Test Today says: “What’s so inspirational about Kathleen’s story is that that she passed the theory test and practical driving exam having taken just 20 lessons. It’s a remarkable achievement.â€
However, she’s unable to get behind the wheel just yet as she waits for her insurance to come through to enable her to drive the Jag. But, she’s itching to get started.
Kathleen said: “It’s great to have a theory test pass certificate and a full driving licence after all these years. It proves age is never a barrier for pushing yourself to do new things. I was quite nervous at the end, but when the examiner said I’d passed I was so relieved and really excited about my new freedom.â€
Speaking about her husband Tony, Kathleen said: “Tony can still drive but I decided to take the theory test and practical exam so I could take over if he gets tired or doesn’t feel up to it.â€
Mr Mitchell is said to be ecstatic about his wife’s accomplishments.
Kathleen said: “He is so proud of me and all the children and grandchildren have been calling me up saying well done. It’s a wonderful feeling. I can’t wait to get out on the road.â€
