Is it an urban myth that new drivers with 6 penalty points or more on their driving licence have to retake a theory test? Book Theory Test Today gives you the facts.
It’s true. If you’re a new driver who racks up 6 penalty points or more within two years of passing your DVSA practical test your driving licence will be revoked. Not only will you have to retake a theory test, you would have to re-sit the practical exam too.
I’ve got points on my provisional licence what happens with those?
If you have penalty points on your provisional licence and they haven’t expired, those points will be carried across to your full driving licence when you pass your practical driving test. If you add to those penalty points – carried over from your provisional licence – accruing 6 or more within 2 years of passing your test you will lose your driving licence.
What are the consequences of having your licence revoked within 2 years?
It’s back to square one! You will have to reapply for your provisional driving licence, retake a theory test and pass, plus you will have to re-sit your practical exam and pass in order to regain your full driving licence. It’s a whole load of hassle and very expensive.
Who do these rules apply to?
The rules apply to new drivers who passed their first driving test in:
- Channel Islands
- Gibraltar
- Great Britain
- Isle of Man
- Northern Ireland
- The European Community (EC) or the European Economic Area (EEA)
EC/EEA nations are:
Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain and Sweden.
I’ve got a licence for another vehicle category too what are the rules?
Current legislation means there isn’t another 2 year period should you pass a test for another category of vehicle, for example, a HGV.
I’ve got a foreign driving licence what are the rules for me?
The rules apply to you if you have exchanged your foreign driving licence for a UK licence and then go on to pass a further driving test in the UK.
