A first time driving test pass means you could be eligible for a part-refund of the cost of booking a DVSA practical test. The government is hoping that the incentive will increase first time driving test pass numbers, which currently stands at a paltry 21%.

Now, under new government proposals, good preparation leading to a first time driving test pass could make you eligible for a part-refund of the practical driving test fee.
Patrick McLoughlin, the UK’s transport secretary, said: “This change will give those learner drivers who achieve a first time driving test pass some money back and offers an incentive for them to be better prepared for taking their first DVSA practical test.â€
No refund for learners failing to achieve a first time driving test pass
The plans, which have been put out for public consultation by the Department for Transport (DfT), indicate that no reimbursement of the £62 fee will be made to learner drivers who fail to achieve a first time driving test pass.
An excerpt from the consultation reads: “There’s unsubstantiated evidence to suggest that some learner motorists are booking a practical test online, well in advance, usually as they begin taking lessons. They then take the test on the date they’ve booked, irrespective of whether they’re ready to take it or not.â€
First time driving test pass initiative gets supports
The proposals for the first time driving test pass initiative have received widespread backing. Director of the RAC Foundation, Steve Gooding, said: “We’re in favour of any measures that will encourage learner drivers to gain the experience they need to achieve a first time driving test pass.
It beats barely scraping through or failing completely and having to book another test, costing them even more money.â€
The consultation will also consider a greater level of flexibility when it comes to the driving test, with options for candidates to take the test at night or on weekends. It will also look at making tests available across a wider range of centres.
Lord Tariq Ahmad, the UK’s transport minister, said: “These proposals form part of a wider strategy to improve the efficiency of government motoring agencies. The proposals are about modernising customer service and improving road safety, especially for younger motorists.â€
The consultation will close on 8 January 2016, with a response expected from the DfT later in the year.
