DVSA Practical Driving Test: What are ‘show me, tell me’ Questions?

The ‘show me, tell me’ questions are often forgotten about by learner drivers when it comes to taking the DVSA practical driving test. Book Theory Test Today provides a reminder of what they are and what you might be asked during your driving test.

‘Show me, tell me’ questions are asked by your driving examiner before you start the engine on your vehicle. They’re asked in order to assess your ability to perform vehicle safety checks before you begin your journey.

Book Theory Test Today says: “With so many components forming the DVSA practical driving test, it’s important that you’re not caught off-guard by the ‘show me, tell me’ questions. Prior to your driving test, ask your driving instructor to quiz you by asking typical ‘show me, tell me’ questions.”

How many questions will be asked during the DVSA practical driving test?

You will be asked two ‘show me, tell me’ questions, but there are 19 questions available to the examiner as part of the DVSA practical driving test. You may be asked something simple like, ‘show me how you would check that the horn is working.’ However, you could be asked something more complicated.

Book Theory Test Today has compiled some examples of questions you could be asked during the DVSA practical driving test:

Show me questions

  1. Show me how you would activate the rear fog light and tell me when you would use it.
  2. Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washer and wipers.
  3. Show me how you would check the brake lights are working on this car.
  4. Show me how you would check that the direction indicators are working.

Tell me questions

  1. Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.
  2. Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti lock braking system.
  3. Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.
  4. Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.

Here are 5 top tips for tackling ‘show me, tell me’ questions asked on the DVSA practical driving test:

  1. To answer a ‘show me’ question you will be required to actually show your examiner how you would perform a vehicle safety check.
  2. For ‘tell me’ questions, you’re required to give an explanation of what you would do. You must not act out like you would do with the ‘show me’ questions.
  3. Like the theory test, some ‘show me, tell me’ questions are asking exactly the same thing, they’re just worded differently. Therefore, it’s a good idea to revise all 19 of the questions currently in use.
  4. When answering a ‘tell me’ question, provide as much detail as you can. It demonstrates that you have good knowledge of what you’re talking about.
  5. When answering a ‘show me’ question, talk the examiner through what you’re doing. It shows your confidence and could help you to remember.
