Learning to Drive a Tractor | Do You Need to Pass a Theory Test?

Not your everyday road vehicle but nonetheless, tractors are driven on Britain’s roads. Book Theory Test Today tells you what you need to know to drive one.

Is a Theory Test Certificate Required?

Let’s cut to the chase. Whether you need to take a theory test to operate a tractor is entirely dependent on which category of driving licence you’re aiming for.

If you want a B1 category driving licence, yes you will have to take a theory test. You can’t book your DVSA practical driving test without one. However, if you already hold a full car licence you could be exempt from having to take a theory test. Check with Book Theory Test Today using our contact form.

If you’re applying for a licence in categories F, G, H & K you will be pleased to know that you won’t have to take a theory test. Simply book your DVSA practical test online today and you’re all set.

When taking a practical exam your invigilator will be assessing your knowledge of the Highway Code, on which, you will be asked 5 questions. Understanding your vehicle, particularly how it operates and its limitations, will also be put to the test. Finally, you will be asked to identify 6 road signs.

Additional Testing for Category H Vehicles

The category H driving test requires you to reverse a vehicle then turn it around by using its tracks. A turn is successful if you ensure the vehicle is facing the opposite direction upon completion of the manoeuvre.

What You Need on Test Day

You are required to bring 1 of the following documents when taking a specialist vehicle driving exam:

  • a valid, signed UK or Northern Ireland photocard licence – both the photocard and paper counterpart
  • an old-style valid, signed UK or Northern Ireland paper driving licence along with a valid passport
