Winter Driving – 10 Top Tips for Staying Safe on the Roads this Winter – Part One

Read or watched the news lately? Britain is set to face its coldest winter in 100 years. So, Book Theory Test Today thought it would be a good idea to give you some advice about staying safe behind the wheel during winter, brrrr… In part one, of this two part series; we cover important topics such as keeping your distance & roads signs.

The Book Theory Test Today blogger says: “Talk of Arctic freezes & snowstorms gives me the shivers just thinking about it, but more important to me is road safety in winter. Ice and snow make for treacherous road conditions and there’s always someone who gets a little bit accelerator happy despite abysmal weather conditions. Stay safe!”

Book Theory Test Today’s first top five tips are:

Don’t drive if you don’t have to – Our top safety tip for staying safe on Britain’s roads this winter is ‘stay off the roads’ if possible. If the weather looks dire, ask yourself – is it a good idea to drive?

Do you really need to drive to the shops, or drive to the cinema to see a movie? If driving in poor weather conditions can be avoided, avoid it! However, if you must venture out in your vehicle, take the necessary precautions. Drive at a sensible speed as this will help you to maintain control of your vehicle should you hit an icy patch on the road.

Watch out for road signs – The Book Theory Test Today blogger says: “Road signs are in place for a reason – your safety. When visibility is poor, road signs provide you with a marker for identifying potential hazards. In heavy snow, pavements may become impossible to see, so look out for road signs to avoid hitting pedestrians.”

Check your distance – If you can see the amusing bumper sticker on the car in front you’re probably too close. Remember your theory test prep? Rainfall doubles your breaking distance and ice and snow can increase your stopping distance requirements by 10 times the distance needed in dry conditions.

When you need to stop, do so early. Not only are you preventing yourself from colliding with a vehicle in front of you, you’re alerting the driver behind you to slow down too.

Keep your mobile phone out of sight & out of reach – “The Book Theory Test Today blogger says: “Bad weather gives you enough to deal with, without the distraction of a mobile phone ringing or jingling. Switch it to silent & put it somewhere out of sight & out of mind.”

Mobile phones are responsible for enough accidents when road conditions are perfect, so they’re likely to result in much worse accidents if used when driving in perilous conditions. Use your common sense.

Have emergency contacts in your mobile – Yes, using a mobile phone while driving is illegal, but having one in your vehicle is handy, especially during winter. Vehicles have a tendency to breakdown much more in winter and if this should happen to you, you can at least contact someone.

The Book Theory Test Today blogger says: “We recommend that you tell someone you’re travelling and provide them with expected arrival and departure times. That way, in case of an emergency, someone knows your whereabouts. It’s also handy to have the number of your breakdown recovery service in your phone.”

That’s the first five safety tips covered. Watch this space for part two…
