A poll, conducted by Auto Express, revealed that 90% of UK motorists think that driving standards in Britain are progressively getting worse. But, just 15% admit to their own driving performance dropping.
The Book Theory Test Today blogger says: “There’s a bit of driver pride taking place here. I’m a good driver, but would never claim that I get it right every time I get on the road. If all drivers were really honest I’m sure they would say that since passing the theory test and practical driving exam a few bad habits have crept into their driving style.â€
Of the 1,000 drivers quizzed by Auto Express, almost 90% said that the standard of driving in Britain had been in decline since 2009. But, modest to the last, 59% said their driving had improved and that the poor driving standards were somebody else’s fault.
‘Older’ motorists claim that the drop in driving standards can be blamed on the theory test and the practical driving exam itself. One survey commentator stated: “The theory test is too easy and teaches nothing because candidates simply learn the answers to a test, not how to drive. The practical exam is also too lenient, any type of fault should result in a fail.â€
The Book Theory Test Today blogger says: “Personally, I think this person’s viewpoint is a little extreme, coming from someone who is already on the road, so has passed the theory test and driving exam. To allow learners no margin for error means that no one would pass the driving test.â€
In a statement from the Director of policy for the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), Neil Greig, he said: “These figures are no surprise to the IAM; everyone thinks it’s always the other person’s fault when it comes to driving standards. But we all have to take personal responsibility and can’t keep blaming the other party.â€
He added: “We must also say the fear of worsening driving standards is at an all-time high – however, our roads have never been safer. If people want safer roads they should look at improving their own skills and standards.â€
Professor Stephen Glaister, Director of the RAC Foundation, had this to say: “Bad driving isn’t just annoying; it’s also the source of most accidents. Around three quarters of crashes have been because of human error. We all like to think the best of our own abilities, but perhaps we should take a good look at ourselves in the rear view mirror and realise that really none of us are perfect drivers.â€
