Motorists Encouraged To Suggest Driving Test Changes

Book Theory Test Today – Motorists Encouraged To Suggest Driving Test Changes
Book Theory Test Today investigates a radical initiative in Ireland that’s encouraging the opinions of motorists as to how theory test and practical driving exams should be conducted.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) in Ireland is set to launch a public consultation on the future of the driving theory test and practical exam to mark the 50th anniversary of the first ever driving test in Ireland.

Drivers in Ireland are being encouraged to express their opinions on how the theory test and practical driving exam could be changed as the RSA looks to implement massive reforms.

In a statement from the RSA, they said: “The objective of the public consultation document is to engage all of those involved in the learning to drive process in discussion as to what their views are on certain aspects of the theory test & practical driving exam and proposed reforms to how these tests are conducted.”

The statement continued: “The over-arching principle is to ensure that the theory test & driving exam in Ireland continues to contribute to the Road Safety Authority’s mission of reducing road fatalities and serious injuries on our roads. The document sets out suggestions for reform to the current theory test & practical driving test and seeks feedback in relation to those proposals.”

The deadline for responses to the consultation paper is July 18th, 2014.

In a statement from the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Leo Varadkar, he said: “The driving test has saved thousands of lives on our roads by teaching safer driving. Teaching and testing standards have come on a long way over the years and we’re now looking at new ways to make further improvements.”

He continued: “The public consultation will help members of the public, and interested parties, to shape the future of the theory test and practical driving exam in Ireland. One of the proposals being considered is a hazard perception test as part of the theory test, where the driver is asked to identify potential hazards in photographs or videos.”

He added: “Unlike the United Kingdom, we do not have a hazard perception element as part of the theory test. The theory test simply consists of multiple choice questions at present, but perhaps that will change depending on the feedback received as part of the consultation.”

He concluded: “The ability to spot hazards is a vital skill and marks out a really competent driver, and its inclusion as part of the driving theory test, and as part of the overall training and testing of learner motorists would help to focus attention on this skill at an early stage.”
