Critical Workers, Driving Tests and COVID-19 – Guidelines

The coronavirus pandemic has caused significant disruptions to the driving world. It’s now become even more difficult for people to get access to the theory driving tests that they need to be able to start using a vehicle every day.

However, one particular group may be exempt from the rules and the issues that are occurring, and these are the critical workers. Special provision has been made for them, and you may fall into this category, so let’s take a look at what you need to know.

Who are Critical Workers?

So, one of the first questions which we need to ask is the following. Who are critical workers?

A critical worker has been defined by the government as being someone who has employment in a handful of specific sectors. These factors have been decreed as being vital for the continuing stability and structure of our society. These categories include, but are not limited to, health and social care, education, retail, public services, and national security. A full list of services is available on the government website, and details exactly who is viable for special privilege during the pandemic.

What Do You Need To Do?

It is possible to request an emergency theory test with the DVLA, but you have to follow a certain set of processes in order to make sure that you qualify for the privilege. First of all, you need to email the DVLA requesting the test, and then follow their guidelines for submitting evidence that you are a critical worker.

The most common form of identification which will suffice is a copy of your current driving license, be it provisional or otherwise, and a form of valid ID from your place of work. Alternatively, an official letter addressed to you with the company letterhead on the top, or a payslip with the appropriately visible details will also be acceptable.

However, it is important to note that the DVLA stresses that this is not an exhaustive list, and is not a guarantee that an emergency theory test will be provided to you. Instead, it is reviewed entirely on a case-by-case basis, so you may need to wait a few days in order to hear back. Obviously, if possible, we will assist you with booking in and getting your test sorted at one of the currently designated test centres.

In conclusion, critical workers can hopefully bypass some of the problems and restrictions which have been put in place following the COVID-19 pandemic, and will be able to get their theory tests booked in so that they can start driving. It’s important to understand there is no guarantee you will be able to get a test booked in, but it is important to try if you are in a position where you urgently need to be able to be qualified to transport people from one place to another, or as part of your work as a critical worker.
