Cost Of Theory Test To Be Reduced

Book Theory Test Today blogger reveals how learner motorists will save around £100 million over the next nine years.

Motorists learning to drive could be boosted by plans to reduce the cost of the driving theory test. An announcement was recently made by Transport Minister, Stephen Hammond, unveiling the plans to cut the cost of the theory test.

The proposal, which is contained in a public consultation on alterations to theory test fees, looks set to save learner drivers an estimated £100 million over the course of nine years.

Should the plans be implemented the cost of the driving theory test in Britain would be reduced by £6 in October 2014. The current cost of a theory test is £31 and, with the reduction, will drop to £25.

Furthermore, there are plans to reduce the cost of the theory test by another £2 in October 2015, bringing the price down to just £23.

In a statement from Stephen Hammond, he said: “We are determined to keep motoring costs down, so we want to make sure theory tests offer the best value for money while continuing to meet rigorous standards.”

He added: “The theory test plays a vital role in making sure that new drivers know the Highway Code and the rules of the road and this announcement shows we are determined to provide cost-effective services that keep our roads among the safest in the world.”

In a statement from Alistair Peoples, Chief Executive of the newly formed DVSA, he said: “By agreeing new contract arrangements for the delivery of theory tests, we have secured significant cost savings, and it is right that we pass these savings on to our customers.”

He added: “We want to make sure that we continue to keep pace with customers’ needs and deliver services in a way which is both convenient and cost effective.”

The recently launched consultation also reveals plans to reduce the cost of the motorcycle theory test, bus theory test and lorry theory test.

Book Theory Test Today understands that the consultation is expected to close on the 15th May. Those interested in viewing the consultation can do so via GOV.UK

The Book Theory Test Today blogger writes: “The reduction in price of the theory test is great news for motorists. With the cost of learning to drive escalating in recent years, it’s great to see some respite for learner drivers, particularly younger motorists.”
