Book Theory Test Today investigates a growing phenomenon that has become a major concern. The latest incident involving confrontation between an instructor and a pupil emphasises what is becoming a growing trend.
A learner motorist preparing for his theory test and practical driving exam has been arrested after allegedly punching his instructor in the face.
The instructor was left stunned after questioning the student about outstanding monies owed for driving lessons provided. The student is said to have become agitated when questioned about his debts.
The learner proceeded to slam the brakes on before assaulting the instructor. He then apparently fled the vehicle. However, he soon returned and continued to attack the 56-year-old driving instructor as he attempted to contact the police for assistance.
Book Theory Test Today says: “Altercations involving driving instructors and students are becoming far more common. They are also becoming a regular feature at theory test centres and during practical driving exams. We appreciate that students get frustrated, but taking it out on people who are there to help is unacceptable.â€
After assaulting the instructor, the young student then demanded the key to the instructor’s car and sped off in the distinctive coloured, Nissan Note.
Book Theory Test Today says: “His antics did not last for long as police were able to track him down at his home address in Erdington, Birmingham, because the instructor had his details.â€
However, the youngster had abandoned the car and despite its distinctive appearance West Midlands Police are still attempting to find the £9,000 vehicle, which has not been seen since.
It’s understood that the suspect was just days away from taking his theory test and, if successful, the instructor was going to recommend that he take his practical exam. However, it now seems that his activities are likely to have serious repercussions.
In a statement from Detective Constable Darren Wilkie, of West Midlands Police, he said: “It appears that the young man owed money for previous lessons. When the instructor requested payment, his student responded aggressively.â€
He added: “The instructor was punched in the face and attacked again just minutes later. The learner demanded the instructor’s car keys and then drove off in the vehicle. As it was emblazoned with driving school branding, it was not an easy vehicle to conceal.â€
He continued: “Thankfully the instructor only suffered minor cuts and bruises, but was understandably shocked that he was so viciously attacked by someone he was tutoring. Personally, in all my years of policing, I’ve never encountered such an incident.â€
A 22-year-old man has since been arrested in connection with the attack, charged with robbery and assault. He is currently being questioned about the incident.
Following this latest incident, Book Theory Test Today understands that plans have emerged to improve security at theory test and driving test centres to prevent such attacks. Proposals have also been put forward to introduce security for Britain’s driving instructors.
