From the various theory test categories through to the learning resources available, you have been well-schooled on what to expect when booking a theory test in Ireland. However, there are just a few more things you need to know before you go ahead and book a theory test online.
In the penultimate post of this series, we look at age limits and your rights when booking a theory test in Ireland.
How old do I have to be to book an Irish theory test?
For booking a theory test in Ireland, there’s no minimum age requirement. However, you’re required to submit your theory test certificate to a National Driver Licence Service (NDLS) centre, along with your application for a first learner permit, within two years of passing the theory test.
However, because you’re required to be of a certain age to obtain a learner’s permit for certain types of vehicles, you should consider when to take your theory test so that it doesn’t expire before you get your permit.
For instance, if you want to drive Category A1 vehicles (e.g. certain motorcycles), you must be at least 16 years of age to get a learner permit. Therefore, in theory, you can take your theory test when you’re 14 or older in order to obtain your first learner permit by the time you’re 16.
For Category B vehicles (predominantly cars), you must be at least 17-years-old to obtain your first learner permit. So, at 15-years-old you can take and pass your Irish theory test in order to obtain a learner’s permit by the time you’re 17.
Be warned that failure to submit your theory test certificate to the NDLS within the two-year period will mean booking a theory test in Ireland again at your expense.
It’s also worth noting that there’s no maximum age for completing an Irish driving theory test.
Your rights when booking a theory test in Ireland
When booking a theory test in Ireland, you have certain rights. If you’re not happy with the outcome of your theory exam, you have the right to appeal the result of your test. Just make sure that you speak to the driving theory test invigilator before you leave the test centre.
Your appeal must be made with 10 working days following your theory test. Upon appealing, your test will undergo a review and you will receive the results within 5 to 10 working days.
If your score was found to be incorrect and your new results indicate a passing mark (of 35 or more), you will be issued with your theory test certificate.
