A young, female learner motorist has survived a hit-and-run collision after her vehicle was ploughed into by another car, which fled the scene.
The young woman was part way through her driving exam, which she was taking for the first time, when the vehicle she was driving was struck by another motorist at a roundabout in Brackenhall, West Yorkshire. The incident took place during the town’s morning rush hour period.
Thankfully, the young driver and the test instructor escaped serious injury however; the instructor is understood to have suffered a minor neck injury.
The young woman taking her test had arrived at Huddersfield Test Centre for the first test appointment of the day at 8.10am. Her test was appointment was taken in her driving instructor, David Reilly’s car, who had recently purchased a new automatic Hyundai 120 just two weeks prior to the test.
Just after 8.30am the car was struck as it circled a roundabout near to an Asda supermarket on Bradford Road in Brackenhall.
As a result of the crash the test was abandoned, and it’s understood that the test instructor called the police from the student’s mobile phone.
In a statement from Mr Reilly, he said: “My student was shocked, but unharmed. I can’t believe what has happened and I am just glad no one was seriously injured. I was back at the test centre so I don’t know what happened. I’ve been a driving instructor for 11 years and helped around 200 people pass their tests. I’ve got a 20-year no claims bonus. Nothing like this has happened to me before.â€
Mr Reilly is still awaiting an assessment of the damage and how much it will cost to repair his new vehicle. Meanwhile, he is currently using a replacement vehicle in order to continue teaching.
In a statement from the Chairman of Huddersfield’s Driving Instructors’ Association, Pete Tiernan, he said: “Driving test accidents are rare, but I knew of another one in Huddersfield just four or five months ago.â€
The collision Mr Tiernan is referring to on that occasion involved a white van hitting a student’s car. In respect of the most recent incident Mr Tiernan said: “The abandoned test will not count against the student, it will be recorded as a non-fault test.â€
No details have currently been divulged about the culprit responsible for colliding with the learner vehicle.
