How to Fail a Driving Test in 5 Seconds A True Story

It’s impossible to fail a driving test after 5 seconds, right? That’s barely enough time to turn the key in the ignition. Try telling that to 33-year-old Craig Barraza of King’s Lynn, Norfolk. If failing the driving test after 5 seconds wasn’t enough, Craig then went and did this…

After failing the UK driving test in one of the fastest times recorded, by forgetting which side of the road to drive on (it’s the left in Britain), exactly a year later Craig has crashed his car. During his infamous driving test failure, Craig described how he suffered a total mind blank and then took a gamble by pulling out of the test centre onto the wrong side of the road.

At the time of his test, which Craig did in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, the examiner turned to him and said: “You realise you’re driving on the wrong side of the road, right?”

To add insult to injury, hapless Craig – who is originally from Aberdeen – had to complete the remaining 40 minutes of the test only to be told that he’d driven so well he would have passed had it not been for his earlier faux pas, recording only two minors.

Craig recalls: “I was only just leaving the centre car park. We were literally five seconds into it. I was approaching the junction to exit it and I had an absolute mind blank, questioning in my head: ‘What side of the road do we drive on’? I had a 50/50 chance, and I chose to exit in the right lane. Instant fail. Had I not been so stupid I'd have breezed through.”

“Honestly, who fails a test quicker than that? I didn't even get to the junction,” he added.

Never seen a driving test failure like it

Both Craig’s driving test examiner and his instructor, Steve Fletcher, said they’d never witnessed a driving test failure like it in all their combined years of working in the industry – spanning more than 50 years!

However, Craig’s misfortune didn’t end there. Exactly 12 months later, he ended up crashing his car at a roundabout after suffering a sneezing fit.
