Do You Need to Take Another Car Theory Test to Tow a Trailer?

Want to tow a trailer? Not sure if your current licence allows you to tow? Wondering if you have to take another car theory test? Towing rules can be confusing, but here’s what you need to know to tow a trailer…

If you have an existing, full driving licence for a car, you do not need to take another car theory test to tow a trailer. However, you may have to take the car and trailer driving test, also known as the ‘B+E test’.

To pass the car and trailer driving test, you must be able to demonstrate that you can:

* drive safely in different road and traffic conditions * know The Highway Code by the way you drive

There’s no minimum number of lessons you need to have done prior to booking your practical car and trailer test, but it is advised that you only book when you can operate a car while towing a trailer, without instruction.

How do I know if I need to take the test?

This depends on your driving licence. The rules on what you can tow depend on when you passed your original car theory test and practical exam. For example, if your licence was issued on or after 1 January 1997, you’re allowed to:

* drive a car or van up to 3,500kg maximum authorised mass (MAM) towing a trailer of up to 750kg* MAM

* tow a trailer over 750kg* MAM as long as the combined MAM of the trailer and towing vehicle is no more than 3,500kg

*If you want to tow anything heavier, you must pass the car and trailer driving test.

If you passed your car theory test and practical exam before 1 January 1997, there are fewer restrictions on what you can tow. The rules state that you’re ‘usually allowed to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8,250kg MAM, plus you can drive a minibus while towing a trailer over 750kg MAM’.

If your licence was issued before 1 January 1997, it’s advised that you check your driving licence information for guidance on what you can tow.
