What’s Lurking On Your Car Seat?

Did you know? Your car seat is dirtier than your toilet! Book Theory Test Today takes a look at the grime and clutter making our car seats potential health hazards.

The Book Theory Test Today blogger says: “Erm car hygiene, not top of the priority list for the majority of people, but that may all be about to change when we tell you what could be lurking on your car seat. If you’re a little squeamish we apologise and we appreciate that this has nothing to do with passing you theory test, but it may encourage you to clean your car seats.”

From dead skin to ‘nose litter’ your car seat could be hiding some nasty surprises, but research by scientists at the University of Birmingham have uncovered some far more sinister car seat inhabitants. Results from various swab samples discovered an average of 100 potentially harmful bacteria and fungi in each square centimetre. Shockingly, your toilet is likely to have half that number.

Of the germs founds, E.coli and Salmonella represented the most harmful, with the study highlighting that our vehicles contain more potentially hazardous bacterial and fungal growths than any room in our homes.

The Book Theory Test Today blogger says: “Well, theory test questions about car cleanliness are never likely to appear. So, it’s studies like this that help to educate vehicle owners about the potential threats found within a car.

Is Car Mess Really That Threatening?

The Book Theory Test Today blogger says: “It could be! The research carried out by the University of Birmingham scientists also revealed that 50% of British motorists drive vehicles crammed with clutter. Did you know? One in 10 Britons have been involved in an accident due to car mess.”

According to the research the top 10 items of clutter found in an average family car are:

  • Out of date maps
  • A-Z maps
  • Torches
  • Old blankets
  • Children’s toys
  • Tissues
  • Broken ice scrapers
  • Old phone chargers
  • Crisp packets and chocolate wrappers
  • Leather chamois

The Book Theory Test Today blogger says: “Did you know? One in five motorists in the UK tidy their car once a year and they only do that because it’s due a trip to the garage. What’s scary is that vehicle owners are three times more likely to use their motor as a dumping ground than their house.”

Unfortunately, using cars as clutter containers can have detrimental effects. Where clutter masses the potential for bacteria to breed is increased. The majority of people would never dream of using their home as a dumping ground like they do a car, hence the reason that car seats are dirtier than toilet seats.

The Book Theory Test Today blogger says: “Next time you sit in your car, think about what you could be sitting in. We recommend that you clean your car at least once a month. Or you could be like my dad and clean it every week. It’s his pride and joy!!!
