Driver Theory Test FAQs | Do Disqualified Drivers Have to Resit a Theory Test?

A common driver theory test question we see asked is ‘do disqualified drivers have to resit a theory exam?’ Thousands of motorists are banned from driving in the UK every year, and some continue to drive even when their licence has been revoked! What are the rules concerning disqualified drivers and driver testing? Driver Theory Test Let’s find out.

If you’re disqualified from driving, the court can order you to resit the driver theory test and take an extended practical driving exam, depending on the seriousness of your driving offence.

If you’re convicted of a dangerous driving offence, or another offence worthy of a mandatory disqualification, chances are you will be made to resit the driver theory test. You’re also more likely to be ordered to take the extended practical driving test,

in which case, you will have to apply for a new provisional licence and undergo all driver testing requirements to get a new licence.

Here’s how you can get a new licence if you’ve been disqualified for a serious driving offence:

* Step 1 – you will receive a notification from the Driving and Vehicle Licencing Agency (DVLA), 56 days before your driving disqualification ends. Once you receive this notification, you can use it as part of your application for a new provisional licence.

* Step 2 – Once you have a new provisional driving licence, you’re then in a position to book a theory test online. Once you pass the theory test, you can then take the extended practical driving exam if you were ordered to take one by the court.

Note – The extended driving test can last up to 70 minutes, and the fee to take the test is higher than the standard version at £124 on weekdays and £150 on evenings, weekends or bank holidays.

* Step 3 – Upon passing the extended practical driving test, you can ask your examiner to arrange to have your new licence sent to you. Once you’ve passed the exam, you’re legally allowed to drive again.
