Book Theory Test Today answers commonly asked questions about the HGV theory test and the bus theory exam.
When can you book an HGV theory or bus theory exam?
You can make an HGV theory test or bus theory exam booking upon receiving your provisional licence. Similar to a car theory test, the HGV and bus exams are split into two parts – multiple choice and hazard perception. However, be aware that you have to book each part separately, but you’re permitted to sit both parts on the same day.
There’s no rule as to which part of the test you have to take first, however, you are required to complete both parts successfully within two years of each other in order to receive your HGV or bus theory test certificate.
What should you take to the test?
The necessary documents! These include:
- A photocard driving licence for Great Britain
- A photocard driving licence and paper counterpart for Northern Ireland
Should you fail to provide the necessary documents your test will be cancelled and your fee will not be refunded.
Taking the test
Multiple choice element
You have the option to complete a practice HGV theory test or bus theory exam prior to taking the test proper, to give you a sense of how the test works.
The multiple choice section lasts for 1 hour and 55 minutes. You need to score 85 out of 100 to pass.
Hazard perception element
You will watch a video explaining how the hazard perception part works. For the test proper, you will watch 19 videos, from which, there are 20 developing hazards to identify. You need to score 67 out of 100 and bear in mind that you cannot review your answers.
Theory test results
Upon completion of your HGV theory test or bus theory exam, you will be presented with the results for the part you have taken. Once both parts have been passed, you will receive your theory test certificate via post. You will need this in order to book your Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC), part three driving exam.
Similar to the car theory test certificate, the HGV/bus certificate is valid for two years, in which time you must pass your practical exam or face having to re-sit your theory test at your expense.
What happens if you fail the theory test?
Should you fail any part of the theory test, you will be issued with a results letter with information specifying why you have failed. You can book a HGV theory test or bus theory exam immediately, but you won’t be permitted to sit an exam for another 3 clear working days.
