Will Learning to Drive Affect My A Levels

We get this question a lot and the truth is, learning to drive will only affect your ‘A’ levels if you let it. The trick is to dedicate ample time to each, like you would when trying to balance your studies with any other extracurricular activity. But, who better to ask than students themselves? That’s what we did, here are the results!

This very question was asked by a student via ‘The Student Room’ forum recently and received an overwhelming response. The student asked, “Is learning to drive do-able – i.e. studying for the theory test and fitting in driving lessons – while studying for my ‘A’ level exams in Biology, Chemistry, History and Maths?” Here are a few of the responses…

…There’s certainly some good advice:

1. “Of course learning to drive is possible while studying for your ‘A’ levels, thousands of students do it every year. You just need to work hard and dedicate time to both, with you’re ‘A’ levels being the priority of course.”

2. “Yes, learning to drive is do-able. You should be balancing your education with extracurricular activities anyway.”

3. “Yeah it’s really not too bad really. You’ll likely only have 1-2 hours of lessons a week (+ any extra you do with parents etc), so it doesn’t really take up much time.

As for the theory test, once you take a look at the questions you realise it’s a fair bit of common sense, and the things you need to learn really aren’t that hard. You’ll probably only need a few days to a week to study for the driving theory test.”

4. “Yes, it’s fine. Your theory test is straightforward, so long as you learn it and it’s nowhere near the same type of intellectual rigour as ‘A’ levels – you just memorise the info in the Highway Code.

The responses certainly seemed to reassure the person asking the question that learning to drive is possible while studying for their ‘A’ levels. The positive reply even prompted another question…

…”Would you recommend that I start driving lessons as soon as I turn 17, wait a bit until I’m in the ‘swing of things’ with A Levels, or wait until the summer between A Levels?”

This particular response was well received: “I did all of my driving lessons during my ‘A’ levels and I was fine. I did 2 hours of lessons a week (apart from half terms where I did like 5-6 hours). I did all of my driving theory test practice at lunchtime on my phone.

I even did my driving test during the week where I had all of my A level exams (there were none available for months after that date, so kind of had to do it then). Btw, I did Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Psychology – doing the driving had no effect whatsoever on them.”

There you have it… the general consensus among students is that learning to drive and school exams can be done at the same time.
