The Book Your Theory Test Today blogger discovers a great initiative in New Zealand that could be implemented to help young motorists in the UK.
The Book Your Theory Test Today blogger says: “I’ve been driving for nearly 10 years now and realised that there is much more to it than simply passing a theory test and overcoming a practical driving exam.
As a new, naive young driver collecting my first car I was excited just to have a vehicle however, as with most things, I took it for granted with no idea how to look after the car correctly, keep it up to a standard where it was road worthy and, capable of passing an MOT test.
I recently came across an article describing a car maintenance expo that tours New Zealand, preparing young drivers for the responsibilities of safe driving and owning a car, and I thought WOW, if only something like this existed when I was learning.
Besides offering practical advice on how to look after your first car, they offer assistance with theory test preparation and life on the road. What was most inspiring is that the expo was organised by a group of young motorists, who originally started out campaigning against drunk drivers.
In order to quash the stereotype that all young drivers cause the majority of road accidents in New Zealand, these young people set about introducing this fantastic initiative that toured towns and cities across the country.
Fantastic! How inspirational that a group of young drivers thought that they weren’t going to be labelled as rebels of the road, but decided to act and show their peers that they are safe, responsible motorists.
The expo has proven to be such a success that there is now talk of introducing car maintenance courses as part of the theory test in New Zealand. To bring this to the UK and implement it as part of the UK theory test would, in my opinion, be an excellent idea. Empowering young people to tackle the stereotype is the kind of motivation I really would have sought after when learning to drive.
Anything relating to car maintenance never occurred in preparation for, or during my theory test, but in hindsight I think it would have been extremely beneficial.â€
The course in New Zealand provides basic and more complex practical guidance ranging from how to change a tyre to engine maintenance and repair.
Plans to introduce car maintenance as part of the theory test exam in New Zealand are in the early stages, but when quizzed, young New Zealand motorists said they would welcome car maintenance training as it’s one thing to pass the theory test and practical driving exam, but looking after a car is something very different.
