Following news that theory tests would resume in England on Saturday, 4 July, Scotland has announced that theory tests will restart on Wednesday 22 July with the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and the Scottish government reaching an agreement to relaunch Scotland theory tests. Here’s what we know…
The DVSA and the Scottish government reached an agreement to resume:
- all types of theory tests
- motorcycle training
- tractor driving instruction
All theory tests and motorcycle training will restart on Wednesday 22 July with strict social distancing measures put in place to protect candidates and staff.
Meanwhile, from 3 August, motorcycle module 1 and module 2 tests will resume, as will tractor and specialist vehicle driving tests.
While Scotland theory tests will resume, driving lessons and tests for other types of vehicle will remain suspended until at least 31 July.
However, for keyworkers, emergency Scotland theory tests and practical driving exams are still available.
Wales Theory Tests
In Wales, theory tests, practical exams and driving lessons remain suspended, with no official announcement on when driver testing, and lessons, will resume. In England and Northern Ireland, theory tests have already restarted with social distancing measures in place.
Motorcycle and Moped Tests
Key dates for motorcycle and moped testing include:
- Wednesday 22 July – Motorcycle and moped compulsory basic training (CBT) will resume.
- Wednesday 22 July – Motorcycle direct access scheme (DAS) training will restart.
- Wednesday 22 July – Theory tests will resume.
- Monday 3 August – Motorcycle and moped module 1 and module 2 tests will restart.
Motorcycle Training
On Wednesday 22 July, the DVSA enhanced rider scheme trainer theory test will restart.
Tractor Training and Tests
Key dates for tractor training and tests include:
- Wednesday 22 July – Driver training will resume.
- Monday 3 August – Driving tests will resume.
Approved Driving Instructor Tests (ADI)
Key dates for ADI testing include:
- Wednesday 22 July – Part one of the ADI theory test will restart.
Commenting on the DVSA’s agreement with the Scottish government, DVSA Chief Executive Gareth Llewellyn said: “It has been vital that lessons and tests only resume when safe to do so and in line with the government’s advice.
“We know this has been a tough time for the whole country including learners and instructors, but I am pleased to announce the first step in restarting some of our services in Scotland.
“Tests for critical workers have continued during the lockdown and I would like to thank all those instructors and examiners who have continued to work to help deliver tests for those who have done so much to help us during this terrible pandemic.”
