Good news for learner drivers in Huddersfield! Kirklees Council has approved the DVSA’s application to convert offices at Pennine Business Park into a new driving test centre.
Following up on our blog of October 18, 2017, Book Theory Test Today can confirm that planning approval has been granted for a new driving test centre in Huddersfield. However, the DVSA’s plans for the site remain a mystery.
The DVSA submitted a planning application to use Abacus House in Bradley as a driving test centre. The premises are currently occupied by accounting firm Crowther’s, who only moved into the offices earlier in 2017.
Unclear if the new driving test centre is just for practical tests
It’s understood that the building’s landlords are looking to sublet the facility to the DVSA. However, it’s not yet known if the new site, which is difficult to get to via public transport, is to be used only for practical tests.
Currently, the Huddersfield Driving Test Centre operates out of Waverley House in Edgerton. Meanwhile, the town’s theory test facility is located at Ramsden House.
The planning application lodged with Kirklees Council reveals that the DVSA wants to create a new entrance to Abacus House, while completely re-modelling the interior to create meeting rooms, areas for driving test examiners and a lobby area complete with toilet facilities for driving test candidates.
Meanwhile, a handful of extra parking spaces will be added for candidates and staff.
DVSA refuses to confirm or deny the move
Despite planning approval being granted, the DVSA has once again refused to confirm or deny the move, having initially declined to comment back in October when the original planning application was submitted.
However, a spokesperson for the government agency did say: “The DVSA often explores options for new premises, planning applications form a very early part of that exploration. DVSA would only announce a new location for premises when it comes to realisation,” echoing comments made back in October.
