New Driving Test Centre Planned for East London Suburb Chadwell Heath

Good news for learner drivers in Chadwell Heath, the DVSA has submitted a planning application to open a new driving test centre in the area. Now, once you’ve passed your driving theory test, you will be able to take your practical test in an all new, local test centre! Here’s what we know…

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has submitted a planning application to convert a former industrial bakery site on Chadwell Heath Lane into a new driving test centre. The DVSA expects around 1,200 learner drivers a year to take their practical driving test at the new facility.

New Driving Test Centre Application Submitted to Redbridge Council

The DVSA has identified Chadwell Heath as an area of growing demand for practical driving tests,

and submitted a planning application to Redbridge Council stating that the new driving test centre would “provide testing services to meet the high demand in the local area.” The application further stated that:

Car practical driving testing will take place between the hours of 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday. Testing on weekday evenings and Saturdays is proposed occasionally during peak testing periods, i.e. summer months.”

DVSA Practical and Theory Test Centres

Despite a spate of recent closures, the DVSA still operates more than 400 practical and multi-purpose test centres and theory test centres across the UK. The new driving test centre in Chadwell Heath will see each examiner conduct a maximum of seven driving tests a day, with each examination lasting 40 minutes.

However, the announcement of a new driving test centre in Chadwell Heath has received a mixed response from locals responding to the application. One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said that the “last thing the area needs is more learner drivers!”

The unnamed man said: “The driving standard is abysmal anyway and the last thing we need is more rookies on the road. I know everyone has to learn and I sound harsh, but they are so slow and lots of them will create so many delays.”

Meanwhile, local driving schools have welcomed the DVSA’s plan. Susan Rossouw of Carcaptain said: “I think it is brilliant. Currently we have to book at Barking or Hornchurch test centres and learner drivers have to travel further to sit their exams.”
