Isle of Wight Driving Test Centre to be Relocated

Yet another UK driving test centre is set to be moved, this time on the Isle of Wight. The lease on the current site is set to expire on March 27, prompting the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) to find a new home for the island’s only driving test centre. Here’s what we know…

The existing driving test centre on the Isle of Wight is based on Medina Avenue in Newport, which is set to be knocked down to make way for seven new homes. The DVSA has submitted a planning application to turn office units at the Innovation Centre at St Cross Business Park, Newport, into a driving test facility.

Three driving test examiners are expected to be based at the new site, overseeing approximately 3,600 tests per year. The office space at the Innovation Centre, which won’t need any internal or external alterations as part of a proposed ‘change of use’, will be utilised by the examiners.

According to the planning application: “The proposed use is complementary to the surrounding uses and is an appropriate use to be located on an established Business Park.”

Meanwhile, a statement released by the DVSA, said: “The DVSA’s contract with the landlord at Newport Driving Test Centre is due to end on March 27, 2018. The DVSA is committed to providing a driving test service on the Isle of Wight, and continues to look for a new permanent site on the Isle of Wight. “

“We’ll make an announcement once we’ve found a new site”, the statement read.

The relocation of the Isle of Wight driving test centre follows a spate of recent driving test centre moves and closures that saw facilities in Huddersfield, Worthing, Aberystwyth and Hartlepool affected.
