Do You Need To Take A UK Driving Theory Test To Upgrade Your Licence

Book Theory Test Today clarifies the confusion over UK theory test requirements for upgrading or exchanging a UK driving licence… If you are a learner driver in the UK you are required, by law, to take and pass a driving theory test prior to booking a practical driving exam. In some instances however, you may be required to take a separate theory test in order to obtain a driving licence for another vehicle such as a motorcycle bus, coach or lorry.

UK Driving Licence Holders

If you currently hold a full UK driving licence for a car, should you want a licence for a new category of vehicle, for example a motorcycle, you will be required to take a UK theory test featuring motorcycle appropriate multiple choice questions.

However, upgrading a licence within the same vehicle category will not require you to take a theory test. For instance, if you have a full automatic car licence and you want to upgrade to a manual licence you will not be required to take a theory test.

Foreign Licence Holders

Should you hold a valid ‘Community’ licence and you’re visiting the UK you can operate any vehicle for as long as your licence remains valid. The appropriate full entitlement for the vehicle you wish to drive should be clearly displayed on your licence. In these circumstances you would not be required to take a UK theory test.

The EEA countries that apply to these circumstances include: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Republic of Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom. However, this is subject to change following Brexit!

Outside Europe

If you are in possession of a full driving licence from a nation outside of the European Union it may be possible for you to exchange your licence for an equivalent licence that is valid in

the UK. In order to find out whether you can exchange your licence, you would need to contact the DVSA.

Should you be unable to exchange your foreign licence you would have to apply for a UK provisional driving licence, which would require you to take and pass a UK driving theory test and practical exam.
