You’ve passed your driving theory test and you’ve passed your practical driving exam, but you would like to increase your confidence as a motorist! Many new drivers opt for Pass Plus, but is there a Pass Plus theory test you have to take as part of your advanced training?
The good news is, you don’t have to take a Pass Plus theory test and there’s no practical driving test either. However, you will be assessed throughout the Pass Plus course.
How does Pass Plus work?
Conducted over 6 hours, across 6 modules lasting 1 hour each, Pass Plus driver training covers a number of driving scenarios, some of which will not have been covered by taking standard driving lessons or as part of your practical driving test.
While you may have answered a number of driving theory test questions, and practiced driving in certain conditions, Pass Plus helps to enhance your skills when going solo as a new driver. For example, although learner drivers can now drive on the motorways as part of a driving lesson, it’s done under supervision.
Driving on a motorway without guidance is a totally different experience, but Pass Plus exists to prepare you for a lifetime of safe motorway driving and more.
The benefits of Pass Plus
Pass Plus driver training has many benefits, one of which is improving your driving skills and increasing your confidence in areas such as:
* Driving on motorways
* Driving on dual carriageways
* Driving at night
* Driving on rural roads
* Driving in all weather conditions
* Driving in urban locations
Plus, you don’t have to take a Pass Plus theory test or practical exam to boost your skills.
Another benefit is that car insurers look favourably upon drivers who hold Pass Plus certification. This is particularly beneficial if you’re a young motorist, as this helps to cut the cost of your insurance premiums when insuring your first vehicle. Simply holding a UK theory test certificate and a full driving licence will not shield you from high insurance premiums as a young motorist that’s why the Pass Plus programme is a good option for young, new motorists.
What can you expect from the Pass Plus programme?
The majority of Pass Plus sessions should be practical, however, local conditions may dictate that some modules are theory based, but you will typically spend around 5.5 hours driving.
In order to complete the course successfully, you will be required to reach the standards set out in the modules. If successful, you will be issued with a Pass Plus certificate. Your Pass Plus certificate will be required when you come to insure your vehicle in order to receive a car insurance discount.
The DVSA describes the Pass Plus scheme as ‘a great initiative that’s beneficial to all motorists, but especially drivers aged 17-24. Not only does it provide advanced road experience and increase confidence, it also gives young motorists the opportunity to acquire car insurance at a much more affordable rate.’
