A number of undocumented immigrants residing in Britain, and awaiting decisions on their UK immigration status, have been taking UK driving tests and receiving a driving licence a recent report has revealed.
Regardless of having ‘no official status’ in the UK, those awaiting decisions have been falsifying information passed onto driving test centres in order to complete a driving test and obtain a UK licence.
Reports have also surfaced that a number of those taking tests are, in reality, illegal immigrants. The irony is that UK immigration officials have reported an estimated 800,000 illegal immigrants in the UK, the majority of which have been labelled ‘untraceable’.
However, in a bizarre twist, it would appear that many of these illegal immigrants are actually easier to locate than UK Immigration officials would lead the public to believe.
In a statement from a UK immigration commentator, they said: “The evidence that illegal immigrants are taking UK driving tests is startling, given that UK immigration authorities have made it very public that they can’t locate the majority of illegals residing in the UK. To be honest it’s almost as if ministers don’t care, rather than immigrants being untraceable.â€
They added: “Illegal immigrants are obviously revealing their whereabouts in plain sight and surely authorities have the ‘Intel’ to follow up on these immigrants that are turning up at driving test centres and acquiring their driving licence. It’s baffling as to why the government are claiming that these people are untraceable.â€
In an article published by the ‘Statesman Journal’ they summed up the situation like this: “On the one hand, what part of illegal do we wish to reward with legal driving privileges? On the other, requiring a licence will at least allow a stab at ensuring driving ability for almost everyone on the road.â€
“There is a humorous side in the sense that illegal immigrants at least want to be legal on the roadâ€, said one DVLA official.
The official added: “The problem of identifying the people who have no immigration status in the UK is that they provide us with false documents, which are very convincing therefore, we have no cause to be suspicious. At the end of the day we issue driving licences and ensure the safety of the public on Britain’s roads, we’re not an institution in the habit of ‘policing’ people, unless they commit a driving offence.â€
