New research reckons you will fail the driving test in the UK, if you’re smart. If you’ve got brains, bizarrely you’re no boffin behind the wheel. Yikes, if brainboxes can’t cope with the driving test, pass rates for Britain’s plebs must be terrible. Wrong!
Smart people… you can thank Privilege DrivingXpert for what must be the most ridiculous research results ever published in relation to failing the driving test. According to an analysis of 1,564 drivers with a full UK driving licence, presumably from Oxford and Cambridge (LOL), people holding an undergraduate degree had a low, first time pass rate of 48 percent.
The research results for people with a post-graduate degree were even more dismal, with just 47 percent of drivers passing the test first time. Meanwhile, those with NO qualifications racked up an impressive 59 percent first time pass rate, but this dropped to 51 percent for motorists with A-levels.
Creative types less likely to fail the driving test first time
If you specialise in the arts at A-level, you’re more likely to pass the driving test in fewer attempts (1.9 attempts) than your compadres studying maths and science (2.3 attempts). However, if you’ve got GCSEs in your name, you will only need 1.8 attempts to pass. According to the research, 50 percent of those analysed passed with fewer attempts.
Commenting on the research, the head of Privilege DriveXpert, Charlotte Fielding said: “Passing first time isn’t the be-all and end-all of driving ability as many of the main skills we need to equip ourselves for our driving careers are learned over the years as our experience on the roads builds.”
Nevertheless, Fielding indicated that the research demonstrates a ‘link between academic and professional success and passing the UK driving test.’

Speaking to the Daily Mail – that ever reliable ‘news’ source – senior lecturer in Psychology at De Montfort University, Dr Lee Hadlington, said: “People without formal qualifications could be doing jobs that involve more procedural skills, like motor control, which would explain why they are less likely to fail the driving test.”
The research indicated that six out of 10 drivers with no qualifications to their name pass the UK driving test with an average of 1.7 attempts.
