If you’re deaf or hearing impaired, special needs provision is available when taking your driving theory test. There are a number of theory test resources you can use to prepare you for your exam, while the DVSA makes the theory test accessible for deaf and hearing impaired candidates. Here are some of the facts…
Driving Theory Test for the Deaf Learning Resources
While you may be able to use typical driving theory test resources, additional help is available with apps, theory test software and DVDs available in British Sign Language (BSL). Equally, you can take the theory test using online BSL. The BSL interpretation will run simultaneously with the multiple-choice questions and answers.
However, it is worth knowing that past BSL candidates taking the theory test have reported problems understanding the BSL interpretation, and unfortunately, you’re not allowed to ask for clarification during the exam.
If you are not a BSL user or have concerns about understanding online interpretations, you can ask for an interpreter to be present at your theory test. You will need to arrange this when booking your theory test. There’s no extra charge for this service.
You can also arrange to have a lip speaker with you at the theory test or use a listening aid (hearing loop). To use either of these services, you will need to specify your requirements when booking your theory test online.
Recommended Driving Theory Test Resources for the Deaf
The British Deaf Association recommends the following learning resources for deaf and hearing impaired theory test candidates:
* Learning the Highway Code with British Sign Language – a two disc DVD set that explains all the rules of the road and road signs
* Driving Theory Test Extra in BSL – another two disc DVD set that takes you through the theory test step by step
When booking your theory test, you must declare that you are deaf or hearing impaired as no provisions can be made on the day of your theory test appointment if you have not specified any special requirements.
