Crash Claims Life Of Young Driver In Glasgow

Fresh calls have been made for a three-tiered driving scheme for young drivers following the death of a 24-year-old.

The victim was driving a high-powered, Hyundai Coupe, which ploughed head-on into a double-decker bus waiting at traffic lights on the opposite carriageway.

The accident took place just yards from Glasgow hospital and the victim died instantly at the scene. Book Theory Test Today understands that the driver’s family have been informed. However, police have not yet released the identity of the victim.

Although the bus was carrying several passengers, no-one travelling on the vehicle was injured. However, the 27-year-old bus driver was treated for shock said police at the scene. The police said: “The driver of the bus was escorted to New Victoria Hospital, just yards from the crash site, as a precaution.”

An official police statement said: “At about 6.40am, a First bus was stationary at traffic lights on Grange Road, near its junction with Langside Road, when a dark grey Hyundai coupe appears to have crossed the carriageway and struck the front of the bus. Emergency services attended, but, sadly, the driver of the Hyundai died at the scene. A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.”

In the aftermath of the accident the road was shut for several hours as crash investigators examined the site. The wrecked Hyundai was removed from the scene on the back of a truck.

Police also appealed for eye-witnesses at the scene of the crash in order to establish a detailed account of the events that took place.

A police spokesperson said: “Any information given by witnesses at the scene will help us to build a clearer picture of the events that transpired. These statements will be documented and will form part of the accident report when it is filed.”
