Car & Trailer Rules Explained – Part Two

In part two of ‘car and trailer rules explained’ Book Your Theory Test Online explains the car and trailer practical driving test.

Book Your Theory Test Online says: “In part one of the series we unravelled what your licence allows you to tow. In part two, we cover the practical element of the car and trailer test should you want to upgrade your licence.”

Firstly, you will need to present your theory test pass certificate and current driving licence in order to book a car and trailer driving test. You will also be asked to present the same documents when attending the practical exam so make sure you have your theory test certificate and driving licence with you as failure to provide them could mean that your test is cancelled.

The car and trailer driving test (B+E) is similar to the lorry driving exam and you can expect it to last up to 60 minutes. You will find that B+E tests are carried out at vocational (bus and lorry) driving test centres. To check for your nearest vocational test centre contact Book Your Theory Test Online via our official website – www.bookyourtheorytestonline.co.uk

The towing test (B+E) comprises vehicle safety questions, an off-road reversing exercise, a controlled stop, coupling and uncoupling a trailer and driving on the road.

Book Your Theory Test Online says: “Whilst there are many elements to the car and trailer practical test you will not be expected to perform some manoeuvres found in the standard car practical test.”

The exercises you will not be asked to perform include:

  • A turn in the road
  • Reverse parking
  • An emergency stop on a public highway
  • Reversing round a corner

Vehicle Safety Questions Explained

Book Your Theory Test Online says: “Vehicle maintenance questions are now part of both the UK theory test and practical driving exam. The car and trailer practical exam is no different. The following is a summary of what to expect.”

Before your test commences you will be expected to carry out basic safety checks to ensure your vehicle is safe to drive. Some of the vehicle checks could include opening the bonnet to identify where fluid levels would be checked. However, this is a ‘sightseeing’ exercise only, you won’t be expected to touch a hot engine or physically check any fluid levels.

With vehicle technology constantly evolving, more and more vehicles are being equipped with electronic diagnostic systems, which indicate the state of a vehicle’s engine fluid levels and even tyre pressures.

It will serve you well in your practical exam to refer to a vehicle’s diagnostic system, if present, when responding to questions on fluid levels or tyre pressures, as long as the information displayed is relevant.

Finally, you will be required to answer five questions, which will be a combination of ‘show me’ and ‘tell me’. For each incorrect answer a driving fault will be recorded, with an allowance for four errors, so consider your answers carefully. Should you give a wrong answer for all five questions a serious fault be recorded.

That’s all folks, all you need to know about car and trailer driving…
