Book Your Theory Test Today Warns Of New Stealth Motorway Cameras

New measures to catch motorists exceeding 70mph motorway speed limit arrive in the form of stealth cameras, Book Your Theory Test Today can reveal.

Book Your Theory Test Today understands that the new stealth style cameras will be coloured grey making them less visible to motorists and replace the current bright yellow cameras currently in operation.

Book Your Theory Test Today can reveal that many commentators deem the new stealth cameras to be highly controversial.

In a statement from Roger Lawson, of the Alliance of British Drivers, he said: “The Government says that the purpose of having speed cameras is to slow the traffic down, but if drivers don’t know they are there…the whole purpose has been altered. If they are being used to raise revenue, we strongly object to that.”

Book Your Theory Test Today can announce that the first batch of the new stealth style cameras will be introduced to the M25 motorway in the summer of 2014. As well as being altered in colour, the white road markings used to signify the presence of a speed camera will also be removed.

Book Your Theory Test Today understands that the cameras are being installed as part of the development of ‘smart motorways’, which will allow for the hard shoulder to be used as a permanent additional lane in order to increase traffic capacity.

A Government source revealed that the new apparatus will also be installed along sections of the M1 and the M3 and will be thoroughly tested by the Home Office. The new stealth cameras look set to receive approval by the end of February or early March 2014.

Book Your Theory Test Today has also learnt that the Government plans to have these new cameras in operation on over 100 miles of ‘smart motorways’ by 2016. In time they anticipate cameras to cover 400 miles.

The news has been welcomed by numerous road safety campaigners who have rallied relentlessly for improved enforcement of motorway speed limits. However, existing motorway speed cameras are infrequently used due to the cost of operating them and furthermore, politicians have been reluctant to antagonise motorists.

At present, motorway speed cameras are only used to enforce speed limits at road works, where heavy congestion occurs or in the aftermath of a motorway accident.

In a statement from the Highways Agency, they said: “The cameras will be visible and motorists will see the recognisable signs that tell them they are in an area where speed enforcement cameras can operate. They are definitely not ‘stealth’ cameras.”

An RAC representative supported the new style cameras saying that the present method of using white line warnings doesn’t serve as a deterrent to stop speeding motorists it only serves to encourage them to slow down for a few moments before speeding up once out-of-sight of the camera.
