Driving instructors in Aberystwyth have urged the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) to clarify when a new driving test centre will be opening in the town once the facility vacates its current base at the Old Welsh School. The school is set to be converted into a new café quarter.
The DVSA does have planning permission to establish an office at Aberystwyth Town Football Club. However, the government agency is still on the lookout for a new permanent home for the Aberystwyth Driving Test Centre. Meanwhile, learner drivers will be forced to book a car driving test online at Lampeter and Cardigan.
Where will the new Aberystwyth Driving Test Centre be?
Driving instructors in the town are said to be ‘none the wiser’ about what the DVSA is doing to find new premises for a driving test centre in Aberystwyth. Steve Griffiths of Aberystwyth Driving School told local newspaper, the Cambrian News, ‘the DVSA were meant to relocate to Aberystwyth Town Football Club, but that hasn’t happened yet and we don’t know why.’
The town is heading into a busy period for driving tests as students return to university, but there’s currently no driving test centre. As a result, many learner drivers – some as young as 17 years old – are forced to travel 30 miles to Lampeter to take their driving test.
Local instructors have described the situation as ‘outrageous.’ ‘To think that learner motorists are having to travel up to an hour away by car to take a driving test is unacceptable,’ said one instructor.
With candidates having to book a driving test further away from their preferred location, they are having to pay higher costs, argue instructors.
