14-year-old driver named as one of Britain’s best

Young driver schemes all over Britain are proving to be a great success. The latest addition to Britain’s best young motorist list is a 14-year-old driver from Grantham.

Book Theory Test Today says: “Meet Robbie Robertshaw, the 14-year-old driver who has just won the accolade of one of Britain’s best young drivers at the 2015 Young Driver Challenge.”

Three years before Robbie can even take the theory test or practical driving exam, he found himself in the spotlight for his motoring skills at the recent Young Driver Challenge event that took place at the NEC in Birmingham.

Competing across two age categories, 11-13 and 14-16, forty finalists from around Britain had their driving abilities assessed by judges involved in the field of motoring. Youngsters entered the challenge, which is operated by the Young Driver, in their hundreds.

Finishing second, 14-year-old driver, Robbie, stood out with judges as a result of his ability to control a vehicle, his precision manoeuvring and his quick thinking when driving.

14-year-old driver wins prize

For his efforts, 14-year-old driver, Robbie, landed himself a place on the Young Driver’s Prodrive Skills Day, five young driver lessons, plus a half day Young Driver at school session for his class.

Commenting on his achievement, Robbie, who is from Newark, said: “It was awesome participating in the final, and I’m incredibly proud of what I’ve accomplished. Just to be in the top 20 for my category was great, but to finish second overall was overwhelming.”

He added: “The driving challenge itself pushed me to my limits. I had to perform manoeuvres like parallel parking, reversing, tight steering, emergency stops and turns in the road, plus I had to deal with independent driving. It was great fun being able to put everything I’ve learned into practice, plus it gave me the opportunity to gain more experience.”

Robbie went on to say that Young Driver has increased in knowledge of driving and how to be safe on the road, which will benefit him when he turns 17.

Safer newly qualified drivers

Head of the Young Driver scheme, Kim Stanton said: “A huge well done to all our finalists – and of course to Robbie, who did incredibly well. Every young driver gave a good account of themselves and should be proud of their skills behind the wheel.”

Set up in 2009, the Young Driver initiative aims to create safer, newly qualified motorists. In Britain, one in five new drivers will have an accident within just six months of passing their DVSA practical test. Furthermore, 25 per cent of deaths on UK roads are made up of 15 to 19-year-olds. Independent research reveals that past students of the Young Driver scheme have 50 per cent fewer accidents than other novice motorists.
