The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has announced the launch of an updated driving theory test. The test has been updated to further improve the safety and awareness of UK motorists taking the test. It’s the second time the driving theory test has been updated this year. Let’s see what’s changed this time…
The updated driving theory test sees the addition of 23, all-new computer generated imagery (CGI) clips. The newly added clips feature a series of tricky driving scenarios in a number of adverse weather conditions, including rain, sleet, snow and fog.
The DVSA says that the driving theory test has been updated to combat an increase in road traffic accidents in adverse weather conditions. In 2017, there were 16,406 accidents in the UK that happened in rain, sleet, snow or fog. 205 of these accidents were fatal.
The introduction of the new CGI clips will better prepare motorists for driving in adverse weather conditions, according to the DVSA.
Updated driving theory test will help reduce accidents
The aim of the clips is to help motorists avoid accidents. Of the 16,406 accidents that occurred in adverse weather conditions in the UK in 2017, 15,042 happened in the rain, with 179 proving fatal. There were 740 accidents in the snow, nine of which were fatal, while 624 accidents were as a result of fog, 17 of which were fatal.
According to DVSA data, the hazard perception section of the driving theory test helps to reduce post-test, at fault motoring collisions among new drivers by as much as 11 per cent.
Mark Winn, the DVSA’s Chief Driving Examiner, said: “DVSA’s priority is to help everyone through a lifetime of safe driving. Every year too many people are injured on our roads by hazards frequently encountered by drivers, and we are determined to do more; we know the theory test helps saves lives so we are using CGI clips to further improve road safety.”
The UK’s Road Safety Minister, Jesse Norman, said: “The UK has some of the safest roads in the world, but we’re always looking for ways to make them safer.
“These new hazard perception clips offer more realistic driving conditions to test a learner driver’s ability, preparing them for overcoming the real-life challenges they will face on the road – something that should benefit all road users,” Norman added.
